Network issues after upgrading to Fusion pro 8.5

$

After upgrading Fusion from 7 pro to 8.5 pro I am having network issues which I can't seem to fix.

Host is OSX Sierra 10.12.2

Guest is Windows Server 2012

I can only seem to get network access on either the host or guest but not both, they both have their own IP addresses, before the upgrade both worked fine.

I've tried changing IP addresses and using DHCP but nothing seems to work.

Hopefully someone can give me some pointers.

Thanks in advance

Problem with audio under DOS

Running VMware Fusion Pro 8.5.3 with a DOS VM. We all know Fusion does not support SB16 emulation, however I have somewhat got es1371 (aka SB128) emulation working.

Here's the problem: it gets detected, but running SBTEST.EXE returns all errors.

Any help?

The same thing happens with the last revision of the Ensoniq drivers released right before Creative bought them.

The only difference is the Ensoniq branded drivers emulate an SBPro, while the Creative branded drivers emulate an SB16.

Fusion crashes when starting default VM

$

I'm running VMware Fusion (version 8.5.3) in macOS Sierra (version

10.12.2) with a single Linux VM.

This setup runs fine as long as I start the VM manually (by clicking on

it), but it crashes without fail when I select the VM as the default to

start whenever Fusion is started. The crash happens just after the GRUB

boot manager page shows, so even before Linux itself is booted.

This is a minor inconvenience that I can live with and that I'm sure

will be fixed in a future release of Fusion.

Meanwhile, recovering from the crash is not straightforward because

deselecting the default VM must be done in a running Fusion, not a

crashed one. This is how you do that:

1. Delete all .lck files and folders from the directory where the VM is

stored.

2. Delete the file com.vmware.fusion.plist from the

/User/<username>/Library/Preferences folder (where the actual

username should be substituted.

Fusion will now restart as per regular and recreate that .plist in the

process without reference to the default VM.

Enjoy!

im trying to open a pdf attachment from an outlook mail message in the windows xp guest within fusion.  i have Preview as my default program to open pdfs in my mac. i get the following message in outlook - file is not in a shared folder with the host and cannot be opened by the host? it is trying to access the local settings folder within the guest.

ive tried to look up setting program defaults within the guest but it just takes me to adding programs. looked up sharing issues and i read that someone is using smb to share guest folders over a network.  i am sharing mac folders fine through the settings tab in fusion.

can anyone suggest what might be going on here and how to fix it.  i would like preview to open the pdf when i click on the attachment in an outlook email.

thanks

Cannot get my Logitech G9 mouse's back and forward buttons to work in windows 10...

I just converted my parallels windows 10 VM to a Fusion VM (fresh install of Fusion 8.5).  In macOS (Sierra) my back and forward buttons on my mouse (buttons 4 and 5) work fine.  But in my VM it just dings at me.  In my VM when I hold alt and press left or right, it goes back and forwards appropriately, but the mouse buttons do not work that way - it just makes the windows ding noise.  I tried adding three lines to my vmx file:

mouse.vusb.enable = "TRUE"

mouse.vusb.useBasicMouse = "FALSE"

usb.generic.allowHID = "TRUE"

But that doesn't seem to make any difference at all.  I cannot seem to change the mapping of command left to alt left (or right) either... when I select those keys, the option to save my changes grays out, as if it's an invalid statement or something.

Anyone have any pointers?  I'm liking Fusion, but can't live without my forward and back buttons... :/

Thanks!

I want to have a version of Snow Leopard Server running under VMware Fusion as mentioned on an apple.stackexchange.com question I asked.

Fusion 8.5 with MacOS Sierra guest: git clone failing in guest

$

I'm having a problem with git cloning using http and https in a MacOS Sierra guest with Fusion 8.5 on a Mac OSX El Capitan host.

I have configured VM networking many times, and this Sierra guest is using the "Shared with my Mac" interface (NAT).

What I see is that the git clone operation starts successfully and the "%" value climbs as it receives objects, but then hangs while Receiving Objects.

Eventually, "git clone" will time out with:

error: RPC failed; curl 56 SSLRead() return error -98066 MiB/s

fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly

fatal: early EOF

fatal: index-pack failed

On occasion (maybe 5% of the time) it will succeed, but 95% of the time it will hang at some % value of "Receiving objects".

Are there known issues with NAT networking that could be causing this?  My other MacOS VMs do not exhibit this behavior.

Weird mouse movement in Windows 10 VM in VMware Fusion 8.5 under Sierra

I have started to evaluate VMware Fusion 8.5 in my Mac. I installed a Windows 10 VM and found out that the mouse cursor is not smooth if Logitech MX Master is used. The cursor moves slowly and suddenly turns quick and then slowly...

However, the cursor movement seems to be fine if I use the Apple Magic Mouse or the internal trackpad. Is there any configuration I can solve this matter? Thank you.

Slow Win10 performance on OSX 10.11 Fusion 8

Wondering if anyone has very unresponsive and lagging performance running Windows 10 Pro on Fusion 8 with OSX 10.11.

I use a MBPro (Late 2013) 15" Retina with external 4K monitor, resolution is great but the performance of tabbing, moving the mouse, opening & closing programs is crippling.

On Fusion 7 with the same hardware i had Win 7 running perfectly, it did require a vmware hardware downgrade to 10 for it to work.

Have tried the same method on Win 10 but still not running as smooth as i am sure it can, anyone got any advice?

Thanks in advance!

VMWare Fusion Professional 8.5.3 suspends every time Mac 10.11.3 sleeps

Prior to this week my Mac could sleep but my VM (Win7) did NOT suspend.  This week the VM suspends every time the Mac is put to sleep (either via timer or when I manually sleep).  I can somewhat understand that logic but I MUCH prefer the VM be there and ready after I enter Mac password to awaken the machine.

Fusion Disk Space Hungry on my Mac

$

I have a 500GB SSD on my Mac and while my VM size is 109G, it seems to be restricting me from accessing the space on my MAC and  reserving way more data than it should for my VM. In short, I'm looking for ways to make more space available on my MAC to use instead of it being hogged up by my infrequently used VM Fusion machine.   I have defrag'd, reclaimed, and done everything in the forums I could find. I also changed my disk on the WIN7 machine to dynamic, but still couldn't shrink it. The only other thing worth noting is that my disk is 'sparse' and not broken up into 2GB blocks. In short, it seems as if Fusion is reserving triple the disk space of the VM itself which is a major frustration. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I work with some really smart VM guys that suggested exporting / importing into vCenter, shrinking and all other sorts of things but I'm still not sure that would solve my problem. Thanks in advance for any solid advice here.

Details Below:

I ran OmniDisk Sweeper on my Mac and it is showing total space used as 195G. Image attached

Screen Shot 2017-01-10 at 12.08.55 PM.png

On my Windows machine, I have tried to shrink through VMtools and CLI, to no avail. No matter what I do to the other partition, I can't free up the space. Image attached.

Hypervisor.Framework

I noticed Parallels now offers an option to use Apple's own Hypervisor.Framework as an alternative to their own Hypervisor. Does VMware have a similar feature in the works? I would imagine Apple's Hypervisor might theoretically offer some advantages in terms of compatibility or power consumption, if not in performance.

Does everyone know Fusion is restricted to one-country use only?

$

I live in Canada about 5 miles from the US border. I have been upgrading VMWare Fusion forever -- I'm very loyal. I have a US address and credit cards and for convenience use those cards (which have to be attached to a US address, of course) to pay in USD.

Now I have tried to upgrade once again, from Version 7 to Version 8.5 to be compatible with Sierra, and the store won't let me. It turns out that according to tech support, the store's website is preventing me from upgrading because my version of Fusion is restricted to use in the US only and the site sees me at a Canadian IP address.

What?! I was told also, that if I used my US version of Fusion in Canada I would be in violation. Of something. Am I committing some kind of crime here?

This is nuts. I have been recommending Fusion to others for years. But not under these circumstances. The only solution that Tech Support had was for me to buy the complete version in Canada, which is a lot more $$$. The least VMWare should do is make an international version available for an upgrade price to people like me.

But anyone who routinely travels anywhere should be aware -- you apparently can't take Fusion with you. Maybe everybody else already knows. If so, do you have a solution?

Good luck!

VMWare Fusion issue after upgrade to Windows 10.

$

Hello everybody;

I am hoping someone can help me, because I have been trying for days to solve this.

I have an Imac (from 2011) with both MacOs and Windows 7 installed on it under Bootcamp.

So I can either boot under MacOs, boot under Windows,

and if I boot under MacOs, I can even start my Windows installation afterwards in a virtual machine under VMWare Fusion.

Recently I upgraded Windows 7 to Windows 10.

And then the problems started.

Windows 10 became slow, unstable and after some days simply stopped booting.

I tried to reinstall Windows 10 by booting from a DVD, but it never gets past the Windows logo.

I don't know why my Mac cannot boot from a Windows 10 DVD, but well.

So, my second option was to try to boot the Windows 10 installation in a virtual machine under VMWare Fusion,

and let this VM boot from the Windows 10 DVD to reinstall it.

Alas, as I have upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10, the Windows installation can no longer boot under VMWare Fusion.

For some reason, VMWare Fusion does not 'recognize' the disk anymore,

and I get an error from VMWare Fusion saying that I need to "Remove the Windows disk from the virtual machine, and then add it again".

Here is my problem:

If you REMOVE a disk under VMWare Fusion, does that mean that the disk will cease to exist? Will I lose everything on it?

Or can you effectively remove and then re-add the same disk again, without losing anything?

I am just afraid of losing that Windows partition, so I don't dare to go further.

I am sorry, but I have no experience whatsoever with VMWare Fusion.

I don't even really understand the relation between Bootcamp and VMWare Fusion...

Many thanks in advance for any input and help!

Carl Philip

Ps.:

Also, I simply cannot find the version of VMWare Fusion which I have...

have searched the net on how to do this under MacOs, but the screen shots are never the same as what I have...

VMWARE Fusion 8.5.3 locks up every day

Running El Capitan 10.11.6 on a 2015 Macbook Pro laptop (Retina display, mid-2015) with VMWare Fusion 8.5.3.  Prior to running the Fusion 8.5 series I could leave my laptop running constantly with the VM running 24/7 and it never misbehaved.  Now, once a day, usually after leaving it sit overnight it will freeze up and I have to Force Quit the Fusion application.  Looking in the logs, I see the following:

VMWare Fusion MacOS - VM fails to start - Internal Error

Hi,

I was wondering if someone can help.

I have tried research this error but no found any answers as yet.

I've transferred my VM from one macbook pro to another via USB Hard drive and the VM fails to start up, immediately stating "Internal Error"

I've tried running a First Aid on the disk and that reported no problems.

The logs in in the vmware folder are blank, but found the below in the /var/log

Jan 12 14:17:12 robmacbookpro com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (com.apple.trustd.agent[1757]): Service exited due to signal: Bus error: 10 sent by exc handler[0]

Jan 12 14:17:12 robmacbookpro com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (com.apple.trustd.agent): Service only ran for 6 seconds. Pushing respawn out by 4 seconds.

Can anyone help?

Mapping Mac special character keys to Windows Alt-nnnn special characters

$
0
0

On the Mac, special characters can be accessed directly from the keyboard by using the option key as a modifier. This feature has been present on Macs since the late-1980s, if not from the beginning, and was a means of typing characters from the extended ASCII character set as Unicode was not widely implemented on PCs prior to the mid-1990s. IBM-type PCs also had their own extended ASCII character set, but as those systems primarily had command line interface (disk) operating systems and text-based software that relied heavily on various key combinations for accessing features, the DOS/Windows method for accessing extended ASCII characters was more convoluted requiring the user to hold the Alt key while typing the ASCII code of the character they wanted specifically from the numeric keypad. (For years I thought this feature in Windows did not work because most sources failed to mention that the code must be entered from the numeric keypad.) Some examples fo these special characters and how they are typed directly on each system are shown in the table below.

CharacterMacWindows
πoption + pAlt + 227
£option + 3Alt + 156
±shift + option + =Alt + 241
¿shift + option + /Alt + 168
shift + option + 2Alt + 0128

Extended ASCII was never standardized so the characters above code 127 varied between the mac and DOS/Windows, but many common characters are present across both systems. Unfortunately, while Fusion does permit the user to do keyboard mapping through the Keyboard & Mouse settings panel, mapping the Windows Alt code settings does not seem to be possible because you cannot enter multiple key presses for a key mapping. It would be nice if this capability were included in Fusion, or better, the keyboard profile setting had a switch that enabled mapping the Mac extended ASCII set to the Windows extended ASCII set. As both of these character sets are fixed, turning on the feature and using a special character key combination on the Mac would send the proper Windows Alt key combination to generate that character. Some characters would not translate; for instance,  (shift + option + k) does not exist in the Windows extended ASCII set. Also, the method for typing characters with diacritics on the Mac may be a challenge to implement, but not impossible.

Anyone else think this would be a good feature to add to Fusion?
